Festival History

Since its inception, the Bournemouth Arts Festival has been a cornerstone of the region's cultural calendar, bringing world-class performances and exhibitions to local audiences and establishing Bournemouth as a vibrant arts destination. What began as a modest celebration of local creativity has evolved into one of Dorset's most anticipated annual events.

The festival was founded with a clear vision: to make exceptional arts and culture accessible to everyone in the community. From intimate poetry readings in local libraries to spectacular outdoor performances on the seafront, the festival has always championed diversity in both artistic expression and audience engagement. Over the years, it has provided a platform for hundreds of artists, from emerging local talent to internationally renowned performers.

The Arts by the Sea Festival, one of our signature programmes, has become synonymous with Bournemouth's unique coastal character. By transforming the town's beaches, parks, and public spaces into venues for world-class art, we've created a festival experience that celebrates both creativity and community. Each year, thousands of visitors and residents come together to experience performances, exhibitions, and workshops that challenge, inspire, and entertain.

Throughout its history, the festival has been instrumental in nurturing creative talent, commissioning new works, and fostering partnerships between artists, cultural organisations, and the local community. It has played a vital role in Bournemouth's cultural regeneration, contributing to the town's identity as a creative hub on the south coast.
