Our Commitment

Arts by the Sea is committed to removing barriers to access and creating an inclusive festival for everyone. We work to ensure all visitors can enjoy the festival safely and comfortably.

The festival is part-funded and delivered by Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole (BCP) Council and adheres to its Equality and Diversity Policy.

Physical Access

Level Access Routes

Most venues offer level access, making them easily accessible for wheelchair users and those with mobility needs.

  • Town Square: Fully level access from all directions
  • Lower Gardens: Level access throughout main areas
  • Pier Approach: Completely level seafront path
  • Beale Place: Slight incline but wheelchair accessible
  • Access from Westover Road: Some slopes and stairs - alternative routes available

Venue-Specific Information:

The Square:Fully level with accessible viewing areas
Lower Gardens:Level paths, grass may be soft after rain
Beach Area:Beach access via steps or slopes - limited wheelchair access

Wheelchair Access

All main venues are wheelchair accessible with dedicated viewing areas.

  • Accessible viewing areas at all major performance spaces
  • Spaces marked and reserved for wheelchair users and companions
  • Festival stewards available to assist
  • Accessible routes shown on festival map
  • Level connections between most venues

Lifts & Elevators

Lift access available at the Pavilion for upper levels.

  • Pavilion lift: Right-hand side of building
  • Suitable for standard wheelchairs
  • Large electric wheelchairs may not fit - please contact us in advance
  • Staff assistance available

Assistance Dogs

Assistance dogs are welcome at all festival venues.

  • Assistance dogs welcome throughout the festival
  • Water bowls available at information points
  • Shaded areas available for rest
  • Please ask stewards if you need assistance

Seating & Rest Areas

Seating available at most venues and throughout the site.

  • Benches throughout Lower Gardens
  • Seating at Bandstand Field
  • Seafront benches along promenade
  • Accessible seating in viewing areas
  • Pavilion building has indoor seating

  • Accessible toilets at all major venues

  • RADAR key access at some locations
  • Baby changing facilities in accessible toilets

Changing Places Facilities

Fully equipped Changing Places toilets for visitors with profound disabilities.

  • Pavilion building: Ground floor Changing Places
  • Pier area: Changing Places facility near pier entrance
  • Facilities include: hoist, adult-sized changing bench, space for carers
  • Please contact us if you need specific information about equipment

Sensory Information

Quiet Space

A calm space for anyone who needs a break from the busy festival environment.

  • Location: Inside Pavilion Dance building
  • Open all festival hours
  • Staffed and monitored
  • Low lighting and minimal noise
  • Seating and comfortable environment
  • No booking required - drop in as needed

Sensory Information

Be aware that some performances involve loud sounds, bright lights, or crowds.

  • Music performances: Amplified sound, may be very loud
  • Evening light installations: Bright, colorful lights (no strobes)
  • Busy periods: Saturday afternoon typically busiest
  • Quieter areas: Beale Place, Community Zone generally calmer
  • Recommend ear defenders for those sensitive to noise

BSL Interpretation

British Sign Language interpretation for select performances.

Additional Support

Personal Assistants / Carers

Personal assistants and carers are welcome to accompany visitors who need support. They can access all areas of the festival.

Festival Stewards

Trained festival stewards are available throughout the site to provide assistance and answer questions. Look for staff in bright vests.

First Aid

First aid points are staffed by trained personnel. Medical support is available throughout festival hours.
